Academic advisor toolkit

Do you have a student interested in NSE, or placed for an upcoming semester? Academic advisors play a key role in supporting students through the NSE experience. Our staff work with students to share where host campus course catalogs and schedule of classes links may be found. Students are asked to prepare a list of potential courses at the host institution prior to meeting with their ISU academic advisor. ISU NSE coordinators do NOT approve academic coursework on exchange, and will refer students to program staff on departmental or college processes/policies.

We require all placed students to complete the NSE advising agreement. The agreement confirms students have discussed coursework with advisors and department chair, if applicable. This document is provided directly to students after placement.

Students identify coursework at the host institution on their own. Then, they should meet with academic advisor(s) to determine how this coursework aligns with their academic plan. It is important that all students have flexibility on exchange, as NSE cannot guarantee enrollment in any course(s). Several resources for planning exchange coursework include:

If a course does not appear in the above resources, please submit the Preliminary Transfer Credit Evaluation request form to the Office of Admissions. Instructions are listed on the form. Courses will be evaluated and added to Transit.

The ISU NSE office maintains an internal database of NSE coursework completed on exchange. We can answer questions on a 1:1 basis using this information.

Information about host campuses and general National Student Exchange policies can be found at nse.org. Advisors may particularly find the academic credit information useful.

Each NSE partner institution has a unique "Campus Profile," which shares key academic, financial, and housing information in addition to campus resources. Links to each campus catalog and schedule of classes can be found under the "Academics" tab.

Students are asked to prepare a list of proposed courses at the host institution prior to meeting with their ISU advisor.

Each campus offers different registration priorities to visiting NSE students. It is especially important for students exchanging to campuses that offer registration priority "after campus students" to prepare 8-10 course options that will be approved during the exchange.
